Earned Media Value Calculator Free Tool

What would your organic reach cost as ads? Impressions x CPM, adjusted for how much of your audience actually matches your ICP. No signup.

How much of your organic audience matches who you'd actually target with ads. 100% is rare; 60-80% is honest for a focused B2B account.

Earned media value / year
$30,000

That's what reaching this audience would cost in ad spend - and the organic version compounds instead of stopping when the budget does.

CPM benchmarks
LinkedIn ads (senior B2B audience)$40-$65
LinkedIn ads (broad B2B)$25-$40
Meta (Facebook/Instagram)$8-$15
Google Display$3-$10
TikTok$5-$10
X (Twitter)$5-$8

The $40,000 example

A consistent founder account on LinkedIn can generate a million impressions in a year. Reaching senior B2B buyers with LinkedIn ads runs $40-$65 per thousand impressions - so even at a conservative $40 CPM, those impressions are $40,000 of earned media value. That's the math we use when someone asks whether founder content is "worth the time," and it's the same math agencies use to justify retainers.

Two honest caveats baked into this tool: organic reach is never 100% your ICP (hence the audience-match slider), and EMV measures attention, not revenue. For the revenue chain, pair it with the SEO ROI calculator or your own funnel numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Earned media value estimates what your organic reach would have cost if you'd bought it as advertising. The core formula: (impressions / 1,000) x CPM, where CPM is the cost per thousand impressions to reach the same audience with paid ads. If your LinkedIn content generated a million impressions in a year and reaching that audience costs $40 per thousand, that's $40,000 of earned media value.
Take your total organic impressions, divide by 1,000, and multiply by a realistic CPM for your audience and channel. Then apply an audience-match discount: your organic reach is rarely 100% your ideal customer profile, so if roughly two-thirds of your audience matches your ICP, multiply by 0.66. This calculator does all three steps.
Reaching senior B2B buyers with LinkedIn ads typically costs $40-$65 per thousand impressions, and broader B2B audiences $25-$40. If your organic audience only partly matches who you'd target with ads, either use a lower CPM or use the audience-match slider - we default to $40 with a match adjustment, which is the conservative version of the math.
It's a comparison metric, not revenue. EMV won't tell you how many customers content produced - for that, chain impressions to leads to customers. What EMV is great for: justifying content investment against your existing ad budget in language a CFO already accepts, and comparing channels. If your founder's LinkedIn generates $40K of EMV a year for a fraction of that in effort, the budget conversation changes.
Three reasons: organic content compounds (a post keeps working; an ad stops when you stop paying), it builds a person's authority rather than renting attention for a logo, and your best-performing organic posts become your best ads anyway - most strong thought-leader ad programs just amplify proven organic content. EMV is the floor of the value, not the ceiling.
