LinkedIn Post Inspector: What It Is and How to Use It

Fix broken link previews, refresh cached thumbnails, and make sure your shared links look perfect on LinkedIn — using LinkedIn's free Post Inspector tool.

What Is the LinkedIn Post Inspector?

The LinkedIn Post Inspector is an official, free tool provided by LinkedIn at linkedin.com/post-inspector. It lets you preview and refresh how any external URL will appear when shared as a link post on LinkedIn.

Think of it as LinkedIn's version of Facebook's Sharing Debugger or Twitter's Card Validator. When you share a link on LinkedIn, the platform reads the page's Open Graph (OG) meta tags to generate a preview — title, description, and image. The Post Inspector lets you see and refresh that preview.

What Does the Post Inspector Do?

The Post Inspector does two things:

🔍 Preview

Shows you exactly how your link will look in the LinkedIn feed — the image, title, and description that will be pulled from your page.

🔄 Refresh Cache

Forces LinkedIn to re-fetch the latest Open Graph data from your page, overwriting any cached (outdated) preview information.

When Do You Need It?

You typically need the LinkedIn Post Inspector when:

  • You updated your page's title, description, or featured image and LinkedIn is still showing the old version.
  • Your link preview shows no image or a broken image placeholder.
  • You're about to share a link and want to verify it looks correct first.
  • You just published a new page and want to warm up LinkedIn's cache before sharing it.
  • A colleague shared your link and the preview looks wrong — you need to debug it.

How to Use the LinkedIn Post Inspector (Step-by-Step)

1

Go to the LinkedIn Post Inspector

Open linkedin.com/post-inspector in your browser. You'll need to be logged in to your LinkedIn account.

2

Paste your URL

Enter the full URL of the page whose link preview you want to refresh. Make sure it includes https://.

3

Click "Inspect"

LinkedIn will fetch the latest Open Graph metadata from your URL — title, description, and image.

4

Review the preview

You'll see exactly how your link will appear in the LinkedIn feed. If it looks correct, you're done. If not, update your page's Open Graph tags and inspect again.

Pro tip: After inspecting, wait a few seconds and inspect again. Sometimes LinkedIn needs two fetches to fully update the cache, especially for images served via CDN.

Common Problems the Post Inspector Fixes

⚠️ Wrong thumbnail image showing

Fix: Your og:image tag is either missing, pointing to the old image, or the image URL returns a 404. Update the og:image meta tag and re-inspect.

⚠️ Old title or description appearing

Fix: LinkedIn caches Open Graph data aggressively. The Post Inspector forces a refresh — just inspect the URL and the new metadata should appear.

⚠️ No image preview at all

Fix: Make sure your page has an og:image meta tag with a fully qualified URL (not a relative path). The image must be publicly accessible.

⚠️ Link preview shows generic page instead of article

Fix: Set og:type to "article" in your page's meta tags. This tells LinkedIn to treat the link as an article rather than a generic webpage.

⚠️ Preview updated in Inspector but not in a live post

Fix: If you already shared the link in a post, that post's preview won't update — LinkedIn caches it at post time. You'll need to share the link again in a new post.

Limitations: What the Post Inspector Can't Do

The Post Inspector is useful but has some important limitations:

  • It only refreshes the cache for new posts. Existing posts that already shared the URL will keep the old preview.
  • It can't fix issues with your actual page — if the Open Graph tags are wrong, the Inspector will just show you what LinkedIn sees.
  • It doesn't work for LinkedIn articles (published via LinkedIn's own article editor). It's only for external URLs.
  • There's no API access — you can't automate Post Inspector lookups programmatically.
  • It only refreshes LinkedIn's cache. Other platforms (Facebook, Twitter) have their own cache debuggers.

Preview Your LinkedIn Posts Before Publishing

Why debug link previews after the fact? Use Postbeam's Post Preview tool to see exactly how your post will look in the feed — before you hit publish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LinkedIn Post Inspector?+
The LinkedIn Post Inspector is LinkedIn's official tool that lets you preview and refresh how a URL will appear when shared as a link post on LinkedIn. It's available at linkedin.com/post-inspector.
Is the LinkedIn Post Inspector free?+
Yes, it's completely free. You just need a LinkedIn account to access it.
How do I clear LinkedIn's link preview cache?+
Go to linkedin.com/post-inspector, paste your URL, and click Inspect. This forces LinkedIn to fetch the latest Open Graph metadata from your page, effectively clearing the cached version.
Why is my LinkedIn link preview showing the wrong image?+
LinkedIn caches Open Graph data when a URL is first shared. If you've updated your page's og:image since then, the old image will keep showing until you use the Post Inspector to refresh the cache.
How long does LinkedIn cache link previews?+
LinkedIn caches link preview data for approximately 7 days, though it can vary. Using the Post Inspector forces an immediate refresh regardless of the cache expiration.
Can I use the Post Inspector for LinkedIn posts I've already published?+
No. The Post Inspector refreshes the cache for future shares only. Posts you've already published will keep their original preview. You would need to delete the post and re-share the link to get the updated preview.
What Open Graph tags does LinkedIn use for link previews?+
LinkedIn reads og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, and og:type. For the best results, make sure all five are set with the correct values and that your og:image is at least 1200 × 627 pixels.
